Ja'lisa Yates's eagerness in art activities through high school led her to further her creative endeavor at Virginia Wesleyan University. The challenge as an art major was to choose which medium that she wanted to explore and use for future purposes. She chose "new media art" or digital painting by researching on how to incorporate technological tools (Adobe Photoshop and Wacom Intuos) with traditional creative methods to illustrate digital artworks. Through many trails and errors, Ja'lisa have developed her skills and shown her final output at the Senior Art Exhibition. After receiving the Bachelor of Arts in 2019, she works as a freelance digital artist using Clip Studio Paint Pro to provide designs and illustrations requested by clients.
Regarding the portfolio, Ja'lisa focuses on rendering human faces through naturalism or use of high observation, but her application of rough texture from digital brushes and saturated color is used for representing various emotions or tone depending on her facial perception on the subject. She digitally drew and painted portrait studies as exercises to establish her style and her understanding of the anatomy and proportions. Ja'lisa projects creative process or step by step progress of her portrait studies as reflection on how she brings portraits to life through layering and use of multiple brush strokes and textures. Also, the process is put together in animation for the audience to witness her skills. Her idea of using digital tools [Wacom Intuos and Clip Studio Paint] along with the hardware to create this body of work is inspired by her experiences in adapting to new technologies and exposure to diverse artists who are committed in expressing their creativity in the form of digital. |
